ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of parental factors and home environment as a correlation of academic performance of secondary school students in Oredo local government area of Edo State as a case study. To achieve the purpose of this study, four research questions were raised. The method adopted for this study was descriptive survey design. The population of the study comprised of all 14 public senior secondary schools in Edo State with the total of 13,006 students. From the population of 14 public schools, forty percent were selected which gave the total of six schools as sample size. Two percent of students from each school were purposively selected from each sampled school. Questionnaire was validated by the researcher’s supervisor and two other experts in the field. The reliability co-efficient of data management questionnaire was tested using CRONBACH'S ALPHA with a reliability cooeficcient of 0.732. Data collected were analyzed using frequency tables while the corresponding hypothesis were tested using CHI SQUARE. The findings revealed that there is a significant association between the level of parental involvement and the academic performance of secondary school students. The study showed that there is a significant relationship between the educational level of parents and the academic performance of their children. It was concluded that there is a significant relationship between parental factors and home environment on students academic performance.It was recommended that parents should improve their parenting style and their involvement in their children activities to enhance their academic performance.It was also recommended that Government should build more schools close to resident and rural areas and make provision for free school buses to enable children from poor homes to acquire education.
