ABSTRACT
This study investigated the influence of music on exercise motivation among University of Benin student athletes, to find out how music impacts their training motivation and performance. Additionally, the impact of music tempo and genre on their workout motivation would be determined. The research design adopted was the quantitative correlation research design and the research instrument used was a questionnaire. Responses were collected from a sample of 50 student athletes from a population of 200. The sampling technique used was stratified random sampling technique.
The descriptive statistics was used to analyzed the demographic characteristics while ANOVA was used to analyze the research questions. From the data analysis, it was discovered that music has a positive impact on student athletes' training motivation, influencing their motivation level during workouts. Faster tempos were preferred for intense workouts, while slower tempos were preferred for warm-ups. Additionally, student athletes performed better when listening to their favorite music genre.
Due to the findings of this research, recommendations were made which include incorporating music into athletic training regimens, allowing athletes to curate personal workout playlists, and using music with specific beats per minute to optimize workout efficiency. Additionally, group music sessions can be used to enhance team cohesion, and music can be utilized as a psychological tool for stress management and motivation. Furthermore, future studies should explore the long-term effects of music in athletic programs, and competition organizers should consider allowing athletes to listen to music during warm-ups to enhance motivation and focus.
