ABSTRACT

This study investigated the impact of Nigerian movies on youth involvement in crime. The study identified the problem of portrayal of violence in movies has raised concerns about its potential influence on real-life aggression and criminal behavior. While research on the effects of media violence exists, there is a dearth of empirical evidence within the specific context of Benin City, Nigeria. The objectives set out in the study were to find out the situation of over-emphasis of negative themes in Nigerian movies, uncover the potential drawbacks or adverse consequences associated with consuming Nigerian films and examine the impact of Nigerian movies on society. The study also set out to propose strategies for mitigating the adverse impacts or harmful influence of Nigerian movies within the Nigerian society. The methodology applied in the study is the survey research design, and the use of primary and secondary sources of data. Findings made in the study were that, the over-emphasis of negative themes, such as violent contents in Nigerian movies, give rise to adverse effects on viewers in Benin City, Edo State. This is as Nigerian movies contributes to the development of negative traits on viewers and also has negative effect on the mental well-being its viewers. The limitations on violent content in movies and TV shows in Nigeria, is a strategy for the minimization of adverse impacts on viewers in present day communities. The study recommended that stakeholders including movie producers, government regulatory agencies and concerned parents should bear a crucial responsibility in shaping society's values through their proper scrutinizing and monitoring of violent contents in movie creations. This is to promote the greater good, ensuring that the noble values cherished by society are faithfully reflected in video productions.
