ABSTRACT
This study was aimed at describing the influence of mother tongue on the vocabulary development of students in Ikpoba Okha LGA, Benin City. The descriptive survey research design was utilized in this study.
The population of the study consisted of students from selected secondary schools in Ikpoba Okha LGA. A sample of 100 students was sampled, the method of data collection used was questionnaire and the data was analyzed using frequency count and simple percentage analysis to depict the responses of the respondents to each research question.
The findings of this study revealed that Mother tongue influences the vocabulary development of students in Ikpoba Okha LGA and more importantly that the vocabulary developments of these students can be improved on despite the influence of Mother tongue.
