ABSTRACT
Mother tongue interference means the impact of the mother language or native tongue in learning a new language. This study focused on the influence which mother tongue has in the study of English language among secondary school students. The population for the study consists of secondary school students of Renewing global Academy. Benin City, Edo State out of which 60 students were randomly selected from a sample of the population. Data were analyzed using tables showing simple percentage and the hypotheses were tested using the test re-test method. After the test, a reliability coefficient of 0.76 was obtained which indicated that the questionnaire was reliable. The result showed that mother tongue influences articulation of consonant and vowels at the phonetics level. It also influence stress and intonation pattern. The study also shows that those that have mastered it, their accent still reflect when communicating. Parents and teachers are advised to reinforce measures on the students in order to motivate the students to learn and improve their spoken and written English skills.
