ABSTRACT
The aim of this study was to examined influence of instructional material on academic performance of senior secondary school students in chemistry in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. Three research questions were raised to guide this study which are outline thus. Are instructional materials available for the teaching of Chemistry in Senior Secondary School? Do Chemistry teachers use instructional materials in teaching Chemistry in Senior Secondary School? Does the use of instructional Materials in teaching Chemistry improve learning of Senior School students in Ovia North East Local Government?
The descriptive survey research design was used for this study. The population of the study comprise of Chemistry Students in SSS1-3 in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. A sample of 130 students were randomly selected from the population. Questionnaire was the instrument used to elicit information from the respondents. The data collated were analyzed using the simple percentage and frequency count
The findings from the study revealed that Chemistry instructional materials are highly available in Senior Secondary Schools in the L.G.A. Secondly, Chemistry teachers in the L.G.A make use of Instructional Materials for the teaching of the subject. Lastly, the use of Chemistry Instructional Materials influence students Chemistry learning positively. The study recommended among others that that there should be policy statement on availability, distribution, maintenance and accountability of physics instructional aids in Ovia North East Local Govt. Area, teachers should encourage active student’s participation in class work by adopting instructional materials interactions as it been found positive that use of instructional material influence chemistry learning among these students, the need for the development of positive attitudes by the teacher toward the use of instructional materials for their students. This will encourage the development of their proficiency and there would be need to encourage, motivate and give incentives Chemistry teachers for extra efforts in return for additional lessons and practical classes. As this will motivate them more to engage in the use of instructional materials for teaching chemistry.
