THE INFLUENCE OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY TOOLS IN TEACHING AND LEARNING OF FINE AND APPLIED ART IN UNIVERSITY OF BENIN, EDO STATE.

ABSTRACT

         This study examined the influence of ICT tools in teaching and learning of Fine and Applied Art in University of Benin, Edo State. Five research questions were raised to guide the study and one hypothesis was formulated and tested at 0.05 level significance. The study employed a descriptive survey research design.  The population of this study comprised fifty-two (52) Fine and Applied art Education Students in the Department of Vocation and Technical Education in University of Benin, Benin City, Edo State. The sample of the study was made up of fifty-two (52) fine and applied art education students, in the Department of Vocational and Technical Education, University of Benin, Benin City, Edo State. As a result of the manageable size of the population, the population was used as the sample size, hence census. The research instrument used for data collection was questionnaire. The questionnaire was titled “The Influence of Information and Communication Technology Tools in Teaching and Learning of Fine and Applied Art Questionnaire (TIICTTTLFAAQ)”. It was segmented into two (2) sections. Section A consisted of questions on the demographic characteristics of respondents such as gender, level etc., while Section B contained of 25 question items in which items were raised from each research questions. The instrument for data collection was based on face validity by the researcher's supervisor and two experts from the Department of Vocational and Technical Education, Faculty of Education, University of Benin, Benin City.

To establish the reliability of the instrument that was used for the study, the internal consistency of the items was employed by using the Cronbach alpha formula. The instrument was administered to 20 students who were not part of the study population. The responses of the respondents were analyzed and a coefficient of 0.81 was obtained, which showed that the instrument was reliable. The data collected was analyzed using mean, standard deviation and two sample independent t-test.

The findings revealed that Smart board, 3 Dimensional Modeling Software, Digital Drawing Devices, Projectors, Video conferencing tools influence the teaching and learning of Fine and Applied Art to a high extent. From the findings of the study, it was concluded that ICT tools significantly influence the teaching and learning of Fine and Applied Art in the University of Benin, Edo State. It was recommended among others that government should provide smart board (Electronic Whiteboard) to promote interactive learning and students’ engagement in Fine and Applied Art.
