THE INFLUENCE OF HOME ENVIRONMENT ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN EGOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

This study investigates the influence of home environment on the academic performance of secondary school students in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. Five research questions were raised to guide the study:

Five Hundred and Fifty Seven (557) respondents within the study area which represent ten percent (10%) of Five Thousand and Five Hundred and Seventy Four (5574) students from government senior secondary School selected using a simple random sampling technique. . The major instrument used for this study was the questionnaire. The questionnaire was designed and validated by experts in the department of Adult and Non-formal Education, Faculty of Education University of Benin. Data were analysed using descriptive statistical techniques such as tables, frequencies counts, and simple percentages Findings of the study revealed that single parenting affect students’ academic performance in school.

It was also revealed that family s type (polygamy/monogamy) influence students’ academic performance. It was further revealed that parental educational level affects students’ academic performance in schools. Based on the conclusion drawn from the findings, the following recommendations were proffered: Parents should create awareness that monogamy is better because it affects children academic performance. Parents in monogamy are more likely to care for their children and provide them with learning material since they are likely to have small family size than their counterparts in polygamous homes. It was further recommended that Parents should make out time to reach out with their children’s teachers from time-to-time to update them with their children’s academic progress.
