ABSTRACT
The study determined some home background factors affecting the academic performance of young learners in Adult Literacy Centres in Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study, five research questions guided the study. The data was generated using a structured questionnaire. A sample of 100 respondents was used. The descriptive statistics, mean score and deviation was used to analyzed the data collected. Test-retest method was used to determine the reliability and reliability coefficient of 0.701 was obtained..
The findings of the study revealed that the reasons behind why young learners are in the adult literacy centres,was due to the fact that they had earlier missed the opportunity of enrolling in a Formal Education system, mainly because of parental financial status. It was also revealed that poor parental support, bas peer group are the home background factors that influences the academic performance of the young learners in adult literacy centres. Also socio-economic status of the parents have impacts on the young learners because parents who invest more on the young learners tend to have better academic performance.
Based on the findings it was recommended that parents have important role to play in the academic performance of the young learners. Young learners in adult literacy centres should keep the right peer group as the right people around them will influence their academic performance positively. Adult education facilitators in literacy centres should be able communicate with young learners about their challenges from home or in the adult literacy centres.
