ABSTRACT

The kind of music that individuals are exposed to while growing up, determines the values they adopt in life. This is because music is a powerful instrument that helps create a direction for humans and then feeds that direction at the same time. This study investigated the relationship between foreign music and Nigerian youths and how foreign music has influenced the lifestyle of Nigerian youths. This study contained an analysis of the broad areas of the scientific research which presumed that exposure to foreign music has a significant impact on the lifestyle of Nigerian youths. In this study, concentration was on foreign music as the independent variable and the cultural identity of Nigerian university students. The cultural imperialism and selectivity theory provided ready explanation of why there is an overwhelming acceptance, dominance and influence of foreign music on the lifestyle of Nigerian youths. This may not be totally true as theories such as individual difference theory and selectivity theory have proved that individual react to messages in different ways. It was also revealed that music has a direct link to the human mind and can influence it both positively and negatively as human naturally respond to the sound and message of music. The theoretical synthesis of acculturation, cultivation, mainstreaming, projection and perception of reality, taken within ideological perspective of media hegemony, showed that foreign music and programmes have positively or otherwise, fostered the growth and development of the culture of Third World Countries or to assimilate, stultify, or completely destroy the culture. Foreign music is in most cases, was shown to be good but not in any way a dominating contributory to the unhealthy desire by the Nigerian youths to immigrate to the western world.
