ABSTRACT
The study examines the influences of family size on the academic performance of nursery pupils. The purpose of this study was to examine how the size of a family impacts the academic performance of nursery school children, to explore the educational experiences of nursery school children in relation to their family size, to contribute to a better understanding of the dynamics between family size and education. To achieve this, three research questions were raised. Descriptive survey design was used for the study, the population of this study consisted of 300 teachers in nursery schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State, the sample size of this study was 60 teachers. The instrument used for the collection of data was checklist questionnaire. The reliability of the questionnaire was ascertained using test-retest method. Thereafter the Pearson product moment coefficient (Pearson) was used to determine its level of reliability. A correlation coefficient of 0.75 was obtained and it showed that the instrument was reliable. The findings of the study showed that, large family size does not significantly impact the academic performance of pupils, Parents’ gender has minimal to no effect on the academic performance of pupils, the level of education of parents significantly influences the academic performance of pupils. The study recommended that Schools should foster family-friendly learning environments and promote parent-teacher communication to support parents in their efforts to nurture their children's academic success, schools should provide additional resources, such as tutoring and mentorship programs, for children whose parents have low levels of education to enhance the quality of their education, schools should organize workshops or seminars to provide parents with strategies and tips to support their children's academic performance, to encourage greater parental involvement in their children's education, schools should consider offering counseling services to children whose parents have low levels of education, to address any emotional or social issues that may arise as a result.
