ABSTRACT
This study investigated the influence of English language proficiency on the academic performance of students in Nigerian tertiary institutions, with a focus on the Department of Educational Foundations at the University of Benin. The research aimed to determine the extent to which students' proficiency in English impacts their academic success, explore strategies for improving language proficiency, and provide recommendations. The study population consisted of 628 students from the Department of Educational Foundations, ranging from first-year to final-year students. A sample of 126 students was randomly selected to represent the entire population. The data collected were analyzed using frequency counts and percentages. The findings revealed a significant relationship between students' English language proficiency and their overall academic performance. Based on these findings, it is recommended that the English language curriculum should emphasize practical application over theoretical knowledge. Additionally, English language learning should be integrated into the curriculum at all levels, regardless of the field of study. The formation of English language clubs on campus and the development and implementation of a comprehensive education language policy are also advised to enhance English language education in tertiary institutions.
