ABSTRACT
This study explores the influence of effective course advising on academic performance of students in the University of Benin. Four research questions were raised to guide the study.
Descriptive research design was used to accomplish the objectives of the study. The population of the study was 780 and the simple random sampling technique was adopted and sample size of 156 was selected. The instrument for data collection was structured questionnaire developed by the researcher and was validated by the researcher's supervisor and one expert. The reliability coefficient of the instrument was 0.89, using Cronbach's Alpha method. Data collected were analyzed statistically using simple percentage, mean and standard deviation.
The findings of the study revealed that course advisers are always accessible to students and adviser's office poses no physical challenges to students. It also showed the level of students who seeks advice from their course adviser. Finally the study also revealed that effective course advising boost the GPA and CGPA of student in vocational and technical education and also boosts their study habit and retention. Based on the findings, it was recommended amongst others that course advising should not be seen as a mere helping students to register their course and checking of academic records, course advisers should be trained through seminars, conferences and workshops on the comprehensiveness of course advising, and students should be given orientation regularly about course advising service to keep them abreast and know their place in course advising.
