ABSTRACT
The study investigates the influence of COVID-19 pandemic on the educational system among public secondary schools in Benin Metropolis. In order to achieve this purpose five (5) research questions were raised to guide the study. A sample size of One Thousand Two hundred and Eighty (1,280) S.S.II students in Benin Metropolis, which comprises of students from Egor, Oredo and Ikpoba-Okha local government area of Edo State, were used for the study. Multi-stage sampling technique was adopted in selecting the required sample for the study. At the first stage, all Fourty Seven (47) pubic secondary schools in Benin Metropolis were identified. The second stage stratified sampling techniques was used to categorize the respondents according to the sex (Male and Female). At the third stage, 10% of the total respondents of male (573) and of female (707) were randomly selected through simple random sampling techniques. Questionnaire was the major instrument used for data collection. Data collected were analyzed using Frequency count and simple percentage. Findings of the study revealed that Covid-19 pandemic has adversely effected students promotion, postponement of examination, increased students workloads and placement, that the interruption of school calendar affected students learning interest, their love for school, increased their desire to study at home and affected their emotional and intellectual ability to learn. It was also revealed that that many students were not learning during the Covid-19 pandemic due to the lockdown, students living in urban areas had access to internet and television broadcast than those in the rural area, children from poorer home couldn’t learn due to less access to internet 10 connectivity, computers, and other devices as well as the fact that many students could not connect to the internet due to poor connectivity. Based on the conclusion drawn from the findings, it was recommendations that Government at all levels should endeavour that the e-learning as an educational palliative serve the learners in rural and urban area, and develop individuals’ knowledge, skills and behaviour in the society in other not to create inequality in the online learning process. It was also recommended that Parents should pay personal attention to monitor and supervise their children until they adapt to online teaching environment.
