ABSTRACT

This study was designed to find out the influence of class size on teacher's effectiveness and how it directly or indirectly affects the academic performance of senior secondary school students. The assumption is that class size influences student learning because it directly affects the degree to which the teacher can react to individual student learning differences and, thus, alters the effectiveness of the teacher. The assumption, of course, is that smaller classes facilitate more effective teaching.

The survey research design was adopted for this study. The population of the study was made up of four public secondary schools in Oredo Local Government. The respondents were selected through the simple random sampling technique. The research instrument was the Yes or No close ended questionnaire validated by the researcher’s supervisor and it was analysed using the simple percentage procedure.

The findings of the study revealed that class size does have an influence on teacher's effectiveness and on the academic performance of students. It also showed that majority of student are not motivated to attend classes or do group projects and neither do they get their teachers attention.
