ABSTRACT
This study examined the influence of teaching English Language in Junior Secondary Schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. The study surveyed 40 English language teachers across the Secondary Schools in the Local Government. Five research questions were raised to guide the study.
A survey research design was adopted for the conduct of the study using a questionnaire as the instrument for gathering data to answer the research questions. The data retrieved from respondents were critically checked for completeness and accuracy. The data was analysed with the use of frequency tables and percentage.
The findings from the study indicate that class size affects the teaching methods employed by teachers in English Language lessons. The study revealed that class size influence students achievement and students engagement in the learning of English Language. The study further established that class size affects classroom management in English Language lessons. Finally, the study revealed that class size affects teacher's job satisfaction. Therefore it was recommended that the State Ministry of Education should embark on regular inspection to ensure that the National Policy on Education (NPE) ratio of 40 students to 1 teacher in secondary schools is being adhered. Also, it was recommended that more human and material resources should be provided by the state government to cater for the high population of students in public secondary schools.
