THE INFLUENCE OF AUDIOVISUAL MATERIALS IN THE TEACHING OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN OVIA NORTH EAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE.

ABSTRACT

 This study examined the Influence of Audio-Visual materials in the Teaching of English language in Secondary School in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. In order to achieve the intended objectives of the study, three research questions was raised and hundred (100) respondents drawn from the students in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State were used. The descriptive survey research design was employed for the study. The tool utilized to collect the data was a self-made questionnaire. Utilizing an expert approach, the instrument was verified. When the instrument's reliability was tested using the Pearson's Product Moment Correlation Coefficient, a reliability coefficient of 0.81 was obtained, indicating that the instrument was trustworthy. Frequency and a straightforward percentage were used to analyze the data. The findings showed that Audiovisual materials are designed to engage both auditory and visual senses and often rely on technologies like sound recording, video production, and graphic design, the use of audiovisual materials have a high impact on students' performance in English Language and the use of audiovisual materials facilitate better understanding of English Language concepts among students. Based on the finding of the study, the following recommendations were made; teachers should explore the effectiveness of various formats of audiovisual materials, such as interactive simulations, virtual reality experiences, and online tutorials, in enhancing students' English language learning outcomes. Comparing different formats can provide insights into which types of multimedia resources are most beneficial for students. Conduct longitudinal studies to assess the long-term effects of integrating audiovisual materials into English language instruction. Tracking students' progress over an extended period can reveal whether exposure to multimedia resources leads to sustained improvements in language proficiency and academic achievement.
