ABSTRACT

Afro-beats are less of a style and more of a descriptor for the fusion of sounds flowing out of Ghana and Nigeria. Afro-beats music today produced by most of the popular Nigerian artists fails to carry a good content (lyrics and massage) to its audience, they rather pay so much attention to their “fake” lifestyle, love, drugs and sex, dance styles, loveable tunes, they fail to portray positive life values, They rather end up producing music with poor lyrics that has largely influenced the youths negativity throughout Nigeria. The purpose of this sturdy is to examine the morality of the afro-beats music content and its relation to violence, fraud and rape; to check the level of morality of the afro-beats music content in relation to violence, fraud and rape and to examine the content or massage of most afro-beats songs by Nigerian artists. The research adopted a survey methodology to gather data from 50 undergraduate students of university of Benin through paper questionnaire. After careful analysis of data collected from the respondents the findings show that the level of morality of afro-beat music content is very low and that it relates extensively to fraud, violence and rape in their song contents\lyrics. It is very important that society pays attention to what youths are listening to, especially in this contemporary period of earnest desire for violence, drugs, rapid fame and wealth, since youths easily access the sound waves of the global popular. The word concludes that any specific music product is committed towards developing its listeners. The recommendation is that the Nigerian government should pay more attention tothe influence and the impact of afro-beats music on youths. The Nigerian Broadcast Commission (NBC) and National Film and Video censor board (NFVCB) who are in charge of music/video censorship should properly check and sanction afro-beats songs and Videos content before there are released for general consumption. The afro-beats musicians themselves should morally censor their songs and music videos before they are released.
