ABSTRACT
The study investigated the incidence of child sexual abuse and the implication for social work practice. The objective of the study was to find out the perception of students on the effect of child sexual abuse on the behavioral development of children; to examine the perception of students on the effect of child sexual abuse on the social development of the child; to examine the perception of students on commonest causes of child sexual abuse and to examine the perception of students on the possible measure to prevent child sexual abuse.
The descriptive survey design was adopted for this study. Two hundred and thirty-seven (237) copies of questionnaire were distributed to 237 respondents in the department of social work in the University of Benin. Data collected were analyzed using frequency count, percentages and mean, with the aid of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) 24.0.
The empirical result revealed that social workers advocates for individuals affected by child sexual abuse and that child sexual abuse have a negative effect on the child behavioural development. The study also revealed that increased advocacy and positive proactive responses to child sexual abuse helps the child. The study recommends that victims should be provided quick medical interventions, that courts should live up to their responsibilities and further calls on all to arise and fight this scourge that is threatening the future children and that Social workers should be trained and educated in rendering comprehensive services to sexually abused children and their family.
