THE IN VITRO PROXIMATE ANALYSIS OF THE ETHANOLIC PULP AND PEEL EXTRACT OF OSU FRUIT (PICRALIMA NITIDA)

ABSTRACT

Picralima nitida is one of the most popular fruits in Nigeria also known as the "Osu plant". Due to the richbioactive chemical compounds present in P. nitida plant, it is used by many ethnic groups as traditional medicine. This study was carried out to determine the proximity of the phytochemical composition of the synergy of the fruit peels and pulp of P. nitida using absolute ethanol. The proximate analysis were performed on ethanolic extract of pulverized (pulp and rind) of P. nitida. Following were the findings of the proximate contents analysis: moisture (6.05±0.05%), ash (9.50±0.50%), crude fiber (23.00±1.00%), crude fat (0.75±0.05%), crude protein (7.87±0.02%), and carbohydrate (51.39±0.07%), with a calorific value of 51.5 kcal/100 g, hence can be utilized as feed supplements. The ethanolic extracts of Picralima nitida peels and pulp can be deployed as traditional medicine to treat microbial, antibacterial infections and other conditions.
