ABSTRACT

This research delves into the critical connection between instructional materials and the academic performance of Primary School Students in English Language Studies within the Uvwie Local Government area of Delta State, Nigeria. The study adopted a mixed method approach, combining quantitative and qualitative method to provide a comprehensive understanding. The study population involved ten selected schools which were selected from private and public schools, six teachers filled an open ended and close ended questionnaire also head of each schools were interviewed. The study was based on four primary research objectives: The research evaluates the current availability and utilization of instructional materials for English language instruction. Findings indicate that a majority of respondents perceive the availability of instructional materials as "Good" or "Very Good," although challenges persist. Respondents' perspectives reveal a prevailing belief in the positive impact of instructional materials on student academic performance. This consensus underscores the pivotal role these materials play in enhancing learning outcomes. Identifying Challenges and Gaps: The study identifies challenges, including insufficient funding and limited material availability, affecting the effective implementation of instructional materials. These challenges highlight the need for strategic intervention. In response to the findings, a series of recommendations are offered. These encompass the allocation of additional resources to enhance material availability, targeted training for teachers to optimize material utilization, and measures to overcome resistance to change. Furthermore, the promotion of collaborative planning among educators is encouraged to harness the full potential of instructional materials. Through this comprehensive exploration, the research aspires to contribute to the enhancement of English language education quality in primary schools within the Uvwie Local Government area, ultimately fostering improved student performance.
