ABSTRACT

In this research, we explored the implications of the Not Too Young to Run Law on youth participation in politics in Edo State. We began by defining the Not Too Young to Run Law, a legislative reform enacted in Nigeria in 2018 aimed at reducing age barriers to political office eligibility. We discussed its historical antecedents, highlighting the global movement for youth inclusion in governance and the advocacy efforts that led to the enactment of the law in Nigeria. Moving on, we delved into a research project focused on assessing the impact of the law on youth participation in Edo State politics. The research project comprised several sections, each addressing different aspects of the topic. Section 1 examined the level of awareness among youths in Edo State regarding the law, revealing a generally positive awareness but also highlighting pockets of the population still lacking awareness. Section 2 explored the challenges faced by youths in participating in politics, identifying systemic barriers and personal experiences of discrimination. Section 3 assessed the impact of the law on youth engagement in politics, indicating both positive outcomes such as increased interest and representation, as well as skepticism about the law's effectiveness. Finally, Section 4 provided recommendations for the Edo State government to encourage youth participation, emphasizing the importance of government support and addressing root causes of political apathy. Overall, the findings of the research project suggest a nuanced landscape of youth participation in Edo State politics following the enactment of the Not Too Young to Run Law. While there have been positive developments such as increased awareness and aspirations among young people, significant challenges persist, including structural barriers and skepticism about the law's impact. However, there is a consensus among youths on the need for government support and resources tailored to young people, highlighting opportunities for policymakers to foster a more inclusive and participatory political environment in Edo State.
