THE IMPLICATIONS OF RURAL - URBAN MIGRATION IN WARRI

ABSTRACT

The study was carried out or conducted to examine the implications of rural - urban migration in Warri. Data was collected and analysed using descriptive analytical tool from 191 respondents who were randomly selected from three Local Government Areas. It was discovered that most of the migrants were females, mostly in the age range of 21 and above; mostly married and had one form of formal education or the other;  had average house hold of 5-9 persons. Most of them have spent 11 - 20 years in Warri. Most of this persons migrated from other cities and for the purpose of education, unemployment, social amenities, security, marriage among others. Base on the results, recommendations were made to control rural - urban migration. These include the following: the development of the rural areas to check the wave of rural - urban migration; the provision of amenities in urban areas; and the provision of housing facilities in Warri to reduce the congestion of the houses.
