ABSTRACT
The major objective of this study is to evaluate the imperativeness of adult education in prisoners’ rehabilitation in Edo state. To enable the achievement of the objectives of this study, five research questions were raised.
The study adopted a descriptive survey research. The population of this study comprises of three hundred (300) inmates of Oko Medium Security Prison, Edo state, while a total of thirty (30) inmates were used for the study. Data was collected with the use of questionnaire. The face and content validity approach were used to ascertain the validity of the instrument while the test-retest reliability method was used for to ascertain the reliability of the research instrument. Data were analysed using frequency count, simple percentage, mean score and standardized t-test.
Findings from the study revealed that the various adult education programmes organized for prisoners in Edo State include adult basic literacy, adult secondary education, vocational education, distance learning mode of tertiary education, e.t.c. and that the level of involvement of prisoners in adult education programmes is moderate. Adult education programmes can help to rehabilitate prisoners in Edo state in various ways including improving inmates’ cognitive skills. Based on the findings from this study, it was recommended that the Nigerian Correctional authorities should make efforts to sustain these programmes, take steps to enable inmates take interest in prison education as well as pay attention to educational needs and complaints of inmates to ensure the objectives of the prison education is achieved.
