Abstract
It is of this great importance that this aimed at investigating the impact of parental discipline on early childhood education in public primary schools in Oredo Local Government, Edo State. The study critically analyses various ways parental discipline has influence on pupils in public primary schools. In order to effectively carry out this study four research questions was raised. The study was a descriptive survey design. The population of the study was 360 teachers in the public primary schools in Oredo Local Government, Edo State and a stratified sampling technique was used to select a sample size of sixty (60) teachers which was 20% of the entire population. The instrument adopted was a questionnaire and the reliability of the instrument was ensured by using Pearson Product Moment Coefficients (Pearson) reliability computation which yielded a co-efficient index of 0.79. Based on the findings of the study shows that parental discipline has a very high impact on pupils in public primary schools, high impact on shaping pupils’ behaviour in primary schools, helping children to learn about the rules and regulations of the schools,assisting pupils on their academics and helping pupils to participate in school activities. Based on the findings, the following recommendations were made: Seminars, parents education workshop and programme should be design and organize by all stakeholders in the educational sector like the government, school administrators, government agency, nongovernment organizations and parents/teachers association (PTA) to educate parents on the types of parental disciplinary strategies, their functions and importance in a child life in order to foster a collaborative environment in addressing behavioural issues, to offer support services to parents in order to promote parent-child relationships and parent-teacher relationships
