ABSTRACT
This research project is titled "The Impacts of Nigerian Pidgin on English Students' Competence in Nigerian Universities". The major aim is to examine the influence of Nigerian Pidgin on English students' skills in Standard English. It also examined how Nigerian Pidgin improves or decreases English students' competence in Nigerian universities, evaluates the prevalence of Nigerian Pidgin usage, and ascertains its effects on the English learners' speaking and writing abilities. In order to guide this study, four (4) research questions were raised.
This study employed a description survey research design .The population of this study comprised all 400 Level English and Literature students in the Faculty of Education and in the Faculty of Art, in the University of Benin, Benin City. The total number of students in both faculties are five hundred and six (506). One hundred and fifty (150) respondents served as the sample size; where 100 students were randomly selected from the Faculty of Education while 50 students were randomly selected from the Faculty of Arts. The data collected was analysed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation and t-test.
