Introduction
Benin kingdom was a prominent kingdom in the forest region of Nigeria, West Africa. The kingdom had Kings who fought for the interest of the people. The Oba was the pivot and supreme monarch. The kingdom just like every other Kingdom of the world have their tradition of evolution. There are various traditions of origin of the people which includes the snail shell hypothesis, the Benin mythology, the migration theory and the Ife tradition of origin. The most prominent, acceptable and common theory of origin among the people is the Benin mythology. The mythology states that the Benin Oba was the youngest son of Osanobua. It is based on this myth that the Oba is reverend and regarded as infallible. The first rulers of the kingdom were the Ogisos. The Ogiso reign was brought to an end during the reign of Ogiso Owodo. The end of the Ogiso rule created an interregnum in the chain of politics which led to the emergence of monarchical rule. The first Oba of the system of primogeniture was prince Oranmiyan. Prince Oranmiyan although his stay was short lived was the founder and first Oba of the Oba dynasty.
