ABSTRACT
This research work examines "The impact of Teaching methods and Learning Styles in Nigerian Tertiary institutions: A case study of the University of Benin". Data collected were analyzed using the "test-re-test" method for the study. The population of the study consists of Students and Lecturers from five faculties at the university of Benin; Education, Arts, Engineering, Law and Agriculture. A sampling size of hundred (100) Students and Lecturers were drawn from the five faculties, twenty (20) from each faculty. The structured questionnaire was employed as the research instrument. The questionnaire comprised of two sections, the first part " Section A" consists of questions which shows the demographic data of the respondents, while the second part "Section B" consists of questions which were designed to elicit responses from Students and Lecturers, on the, "impact of Teaching methods and learning styles in Nigerian Tertiary institutions at the University of Benin. The instrument was reviewed and certified by the project supervisor.
Findings revealed that the most commonly used teaching methods by university lecturers at the undergraduate level in Nigerian universities remains the conventional Teacher-centered Lecture method of teaching. The findings also indicated that, Students input in the teaching and learning process is entirely encouraged and should be therefore considered. More also, it was revealed that the use of continuous assessment has been a relevant tool in assisting and facilitating Student learning and academic performance. In conclusion, the studies also indicated that the kind of teaching methods utilized by the teacher will to a large extend determine the academic outcome and performance of the students either negative or positive. It becomes imperative for the various citadels of learning to pay keen attention in ensuring that teachers employ the most adequate methods for the overall development of the learner as we as the greater good of the institution and the society at large. The government and appropriate bodies is also advised to make regular and professionally trainings a consistent practice among university lecturers to ensure that they are equipped with necessary skills and abilities that can match up with world dynamics in order to achieve in the learner the University goals and objectives of learning.
