ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of teachers’ motivation on the effective teaching and learning of History in secondary schools in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State. In line with the research questions, the objectives of this study include to: ascertain the relationship between motivation and teacher’s job performance in public and private secondary schools in Ikpoba-Okha L.G.A.; determine the factors that affect teachers’ motivation in public and private secondary schools in Ikpoba-Okha L.G.A.; examine the impact of teachers’ motivation on the effective teaching and learning of History in secondary schools in Ikpoba-Okha L.G.A.; ascertain if there are motivational differences in public and private secondary schools in Ikpoba-Okha L.G.A.

The instrument used for the study is a structured questionnaire using the Likert Scale of Measurement with assigned weight of 5 for Strongly Agree (SA), 4 for Agree (A), 3 for Undecided (U), 2 for Disagree (D), and 1 for Strongly Disagree (SD). The structured questionnaire comprised the demographic characteristics of respondents and 25 items (questions) which were in line with the research questions and objectives. The sample size of the study population included twelve (20) public schools and five (10) private schools in Ikpoba-Okha L.G.A.

The statistical method used in analyzing the data for this study is the frequency count and simple percentage. Based on the research questions and objectives, the study revealed that: there is relationship between motivation and teacher’s job performance in public and private secondary schools in Ikpoba-Okha L.G.A.; there are factors that affect teachers’ motivation in public and private secondary schools in Ikpoba-Okha L.G.A.; there are impacts of teachers’ motivation on the effective teaching and learning of History in secondary schools in Ikpoba-Okha L.G.A.; there are motivational differences in public and private secondary schools in Ikpoba-Okha L.G.A. The researcher also put forward some recommendations.
