THE IMPACT OF TEACHER-STUDENT RELATIONSHIP ON STUDENT ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to examine the impact of teacher-student relationship on student academic performance: case study of some selected public secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo state. To make these possible three purposes of the study were raised to ascertain if student-teacher relationship has an impact on students’ academic performance, find out the psycho-social profile of a good teacher in the vision of the questioned students and to find out how to improve student-teacher relationship.

Descriptive survey research design was adopted to accomplish the objectives of the study. The population of the study consists of thirty-one thousand and sixty-four (31,064) students in Oredo Local Government Area and the sample size of one hundred (100) students was used for the study. The instrument for data collection was the questionnaire. The reliability coefficient was 0.81 was obtained using Correlation Coefficient Index. The data collected were analyzed statistically using the statistical package of social sciences (SPSS) software.

The study revealed that poor teacher-student relationship has a negative effect on students’ academic performance and that Student who have poor relationship with their teachers prone to fail. The researcher therefore recommend that teachers should try and reinforce their students passively whenever they answer questions correctly or wrongly in the class and that School management should employ qualified and sound minded teachers, so that they will be able to develop, nurture and maintain good relationship with their students.
