ABSTRACT

The study examines the concept of training and development and employee performance among non academic staff of the University of Benin. It sought to ascertain if there is a significant relationship between training and development and employee performance among non academic staff of the University of Benin taking into consideration some dimensions of training and development (on the job training, induction training, off the job training and career development training). It also sought to ascertain if there a significant relationship between training and development and employee performance for the achievement of organizational goals. A convenience sampling method was adopted and a sample size of 180 was used and distributed. A total number of 158 questionnaires was retrieved and analysed for the study. Descriptive statistics and ANOVA were adopted for the analysis of the stated hypothesis. The study revealed that there is a significant relationship between training and development and employee performance for the achievement of organizational goals. It also revealed that out of the four dimensions of training and development that were considered, three of them (on the job training, off the job training and career development training) had significant relationships with employee performance and induction training had an insignificant relationship with employee performance. It was concluded that training and development positively and significantly affects employee performance and that training and development is a strong determinant of employees performance with the level of significance of 5%.
