THE IMPACT OF SKILL ACQUISITION PROGRAMME ON THE EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN IN EGOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

This study assess the impact of skill acquistion programmes on the empowerment of women in Egor Local Government Area. Four research questions were raised to guide the study. The study adopted the descriptive survey design method. A total of one hundred and fifty (150) women in Egor Local Government Area was used in this research. The major instrument used for this study was the questionnaire. The questionnaire was designed and validated by experts in the department of Adult and Non-formal Education, Faculty of Education, University of Benin. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistical techniques such as, tables, frequency counts,percentages and mean score analysis. The criterion mean of 2.50 was used for decision making. Findings of this study revealed that tailoring, bakery, decoration, catering, soap making and Hairdressing are Skill Acquistion Programmes in Egor Local Government Area, it was further revealed that skill acquistion programmes has influenced the social and economical lives of women in Egor Local Government Area by increasing their awareness of economic opportunities, increasing opportunities for social networking, increasing their ability to generate income,  assist them in gaining access to new employment opportunities. It was further recommended that skill acquistion programmes should be more focused on by the government through creation of additional technical and vocational schools in order to accomodate and train women in different fields of technical and vocational education as they are under represented in the country.Technical and vocational education will be popularized to embrace the advancement of the women and acquisition of skills for women should be encouraged, motivated and elevated above the acquisition of mere certificates.
