ABSTRACT

The research examined the impact of sex education on the health of young females in Oredo Local Government Area (LGA). The study aimed to explore the correlation between the level of sex education received and the knowledge of sexual health and reproductive rights, as well as the influence of attitudes and socio-cultural factors on the effectiveness of sex education programs. Additionally, it sought to identify the barriers faced by educators and policymakers in implementing comprehensive sex education and their implications for the health outcomes of young females in the region. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design and involved a sample of 100 young females selected through purposive random sampling from a total population of 1,111. Data were collected using a Likert scale questionnaire designed by the researcher, which included sections on demographic information and questions covering the study’s key areas of focus. The data collection was carried out directly by the researcher to ensure high response rates, with a 100% return rate achieved. Analysis of the data revealed that respondents perceived their sex education as sufficient, and 80% reported that the education positively impacted their knowledge of sexual health. However, some felt knowledgeable about their reproductive rights, highlighting a gap in the curriculum. The findings indicated that while sex education was viewed as beneficial by respondents, its influence on sexual behaviors was mixed, with only 44% acknowledging a direct impact on their actions. Socio-cultural factors were found to significantly affect the effectiveness of sex education programs, as reported by the respondents. These factors, along with resistance from conservative groups, limited resources, societal stigma, and inadequate training for educators, were identified as major challenges in implementing comprehensive sex education in Oredo LGA. Based on these findings, recommendations were made to advocate for comprehensive sex education, increase resource allocation, provide continuous training for educators, and engage community stakeholders in reducing societal stigma and supporting sex education initiatives
