THE IMPACT OF SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT ON STUDENTS ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of school environment on the academic performance of students in Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State. In order to achieve this purpose, four (4) research questions were raised to guide the study., The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study and a structured questionnaire entitled "impact of school environment on students' academic performance questionnaire" was used for data collection. One hundred students were randomly selected from five secondary schools in Isoko South L.G.A. was used for the study. Data collected were analyzed using frequency count and simple percentage. The findings of the study revealed that most secondary schools in Isoko South L.G.A are in p0or condition with inadequate school and instructional facilities to promote the level of students academic performance and that student in school with high facilities perform better than their counterparts in school without adequate facilities. The study further revealed that the physical facilities in secondary schools were not all that suitable for teaching and learning. And that class size has high impact on students academic performance. It was concluded that most secondary schools in Isoko South L.G.A. are in poor conditions, with poor environment, inadequate school facilities, dilapidated school roofs, cracking walls and non-availability of instructional materials which are all essential for students academic performance. Based on these findings, it was recommended that the Government, the school management, community and parents should endeavor to improve the level of school environment through the provision of adequate school facilities, renovation of old and collapsing building and provision of more school facilities to enhance academic performance.
