ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to determine the impact of recreation and tourism on socioeconomic development in Edo State. A descriptive survey design was used and multistage sampling procedure was used to select 400 respondents for this study, consisting of workers from the ministry of culture and tourism, and also visitors from 10 selected recreation and tourist centers in Edo State.
The simple count, frequency, percentages was used to analyze the demographic information of the respondents and data generated from the questionnaires while the student T-test was used to test the hypothesis of this study. The findings of this study revealed that there are social and economic importance of recreation in the study area which include employment opportunities and also commercialization of culture and artworks among others.
It was also discovered that there are lots of recreation and tourism centers in Edo State that people love to visit. It is also worthy to spell it out that these visitors are not only inhabitants of Edo state or citizens. Since the establishment of some of these recreation and tourism centers, the taste, wants and needs of the people have been put into consideration, which has led to availability of dishes. . It has also been discovered in this study that some factors exists as determinants of the promotion of recreation and tourism in any given area. These factors must be addressed and ensured that they do not negatively affect the promotion of recreation and tourism in Edo State and Nigeria at large as this will guarantee the continuous contribution of recreation and tourism to socio-cultural and economic development in Edo State and Nigeria as a nation.
