ABSTRACT
Poverty has been a serious problem facing all society over these years. This study examined the relationship between poverty and educational development of citizens. The aim of this study is to investigate how poverty has impacted educational development of citizens from 2015-2022 (from their secondary education to tertiary education) and also investigate how education process and accessibility could alleviate poverty in Nigeria. The study made use of a descriptive research design. In carrying out this research study, primary and secondary sources of data collection were employed, while chi-square and simple percentages were used to analyze the data collected through the administration of questionnaire from the sample of 300 of which the researcher was able to collect 243 responses from University of Benin students. Analysis revealed that there is a relationship between poverty and educational development as it determines what level of education people should have in Nigeria. Also, the analysis showed that government assistance through robust social system will help alleviate poverty. This study concluded that education remains the key for breaking the vicious cycle of poverty and adequate investment in it by the government will go a long way in securing a brighter future for citizens. This study recommended that government effort together with organizations like civil society organizations support can help impoverished students in attaining their full academic potentials.
