ABSTRACT

The impact of Poultry production on economic growth in Nigeria has generated lots of empirical studies with mixed findings. However, Poultry production is generally believed to be positively related to economic growth. More precisely, it is held that appropriate agricultural policies with respect to poultry production in certain situations can be used to stimulate growth and developments. Yet, diverse opinions have continued to emerge on how poultry production can influence economic growth. The main objective of this study is to ascertain the impact of poultry production on economic growth. Solow growth model is employed for the study with emphases on how poultry meat production, poultry bird production and poultry egg production influence economic growth in Nigeria. Therefore, this study has empirically examined the impact of poultry production on economic growth in Nigeria using annual time series data for the period 1981-2019. The dependent variable is real GDP, a proxy for economic growth while the independent variables are poultry meat production, poultry bird production and poultry egg production. Augmented Dickey-fuller (ADF) test was used for the unit root test and the variables were found to be stationary at first difference. Then Johansen (1998) technique was used to establish if the stationary variables are co-integrated. In addition, ECM is employed to correct any form of disequilibrium in the short run. The result of stationarity and normality test reveals that the model is fairly well specified and could be used for policy analysis. The analysis was based on data extracted from United Nation’s Food and Agricultural Organisation Statistics (FAOSTAT, 2019) and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN, 2019) statistical bulletin. The result of the analysis shows that all the variables were statistically significant at 5%. The result reveals that, overall, a positive relationship exists between poultry bird production and economic growth in Nigeria. The study therefore suggest that efforts should be geared towards boosting poultry bird production in the country.
