THE IMPACT OF PERSONALITY TRAITS ON STUDENTS ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN FACULTY OF EDUCATION

ABSTRACT

The study examined the impact of personality traits on the academic performance of final-year students of guidance and counseling in the University of Benin. To carry out this research, three research questions were raised and two hypothesis were formulated for the study.

The design used for this study is the survey research design. The target population constituted of final-year guidance and Counseling students of the Department of Educational Evaluation Counseling Psychology, faculty of education. The sample size for the study was 100 students.  The study adopted the random sampling technique in selecting the samples. The main instrument used in the collection of data was a questionnaire titled personality trait scale . The instrument was validated by the researchers’ supervisor and two other experts in the Department of Educational Evaluation and Counseling Psychology. To ascertain the reliability of the instrument a study was conducted using 20 students who were not part of the sample . The reliability estimate of 0.725 was obtained using Cronbach’s Alpha statistics which shows that the scale was reliable. The researcher distributed the questionnaire personally to the respondents. The data collected was tested using one sample t-test for all hypotheses formulated for the study.

The following findings were derived, openness, conscientiousness,extraversion and agreeableness significantly influence performance while neuroticism does not. Also, the influence of personality straits on students’ performance does not significantly differ by sex based on the findings of the study. It was recommended that students students should try as much as possible to be open to change, conscientiousness, improve on their level of socialization to enable them improve on their performance.
