ABSTRACT

The present research study delves into the complex relationship between peer pressure and drug abuse, with a specific focus on examining the impact of peer influence on teenagers' involvement in drug misuse within the Oluku Community. The study aims to identify the underlying reasons behind drug abuse among teenagers, evaluate the effects of peer pressure on substance use, assess how family ties influence teenage drug misuse, and explore potential social work intervention strategies for addressing this issue. To achieve these objectives, a descriptive methodology was employed in this investigation. A sample size of 150 individuals was carefully selected from the population using Proportionate Stratified Random Sampling technique. Data were collected through questionnaires and subsequently analyzed to draw meaningful conclusions. The results of this study have revealed several key factors that contribute to increased susceptibility to peer pressure leading to drug misuse among teenagers. Poor parental supervision, low self-esteem, ineffective government policy execution, and poverty are identified as major contributors to this issue. Additionally, feelings of missing out (FOMO) serve as a significant motivator for teens engaging in such behavior. Overall, this research highlights the urgent need for effective interventions aimed at preventing and addressing teenage drug abuse within communities like Oluku. By addressing root causes such as poor parental supervision and low self-esteem while also developing tailored intervention strategies based on individual needs and circumstances, we can work towards creating a safer and healthier environment for our youth.
