ABSTRACT
The purpose of this research was designed to investigate the impact of parental control and marital conflict on adolescent's self-regulation and adjustment. 200 students were selected from senior secondary class two (2) students in public schools in Benin metropolis of Edo State. Benin metropolis is made up of four local Government area viz, Egor, Oredo, Ikpoba-Okha and Ovia North- East.
The collection of data was carried out through the administration of questionnaire to two hundred (200) students. The data were interpreted and discussed using mean and standard deviation table. The research instrument that was used for the study was a structured questionnaire developed by Jamie Luz Tongco (2017). The Cronbanch Alpha was used to determine the reliability of the instrument. A Cronbach coefficient of 0.73 was obtained showing the reliability of the instrument. The instrument was titled: “The impact of parental controls and marital conflict on adolescent self-regulation (TIPMAS)”. The questionnaire was divided into two section A and B. Section “A” comprised of personal data of respondents while section “B” comprised of 20 questions bothering on childhood trauma amongst postgraduate students. The questionnaire consisted of 4-point Likert scale response of Strongly agree (SA), Agreed (A), Disagree (D), Strongly Disagree (SD).
The findings from the analysis indicate that both parental control and marital conflict significantly affect adolescent self-regulation and adjustment. Parental control generally exerts a positive influence, aiding adolescents in making better decisions and achieving their goals. Conversely, marital conflict introduces confusion and emotional distress, adversely impacting adolescents' adjustment. It was recommended that Maintain a balance between control and autonomy to support adolescents' decision-making capabilities. Implement or strengthen counseling services to support students dealing with family conflicts. community support programs for families undergoing marital conflicts to mitigate their impact on children.
