ABSTRACT

In conclusion, the study provides a comprehensive understanding of the multifaceted negative impact of oil exploration and exploitation on the people of Jesse Kingdom and the wider Niger Delta region. From the socio-economic disparities to the environmental degradation and cultural disruption, the adverse effects of oil activities are deeply ingrained in the fabric of communities like Jesse. The reactions of the people to these challenges have been varied, ranging from peaceful protests to militant activities. The pipeline explosion in Jesse in 1998 stands as a stark reminder of the human cost associated with oil infrastructure, leading to significant loss of life and widespread devastation. Despite these tragedies, government responses have often been inadequate, failing to address the root causes of the issues and provide meaningful solutions to affected communities. The impact of oil exploration and exploitation on the socio-economic landscape of communities like Jesse Kingdom is profound. Despite being situated on vast oil reserves, the local population continues to grapple with poverty, limited educational opportunities, inadequate healthcare facilities, and basic infrastructure deficiencies. The influx of revenue from the oil sector has not translated into tangible benefits for the people, leading to a widening gap between the wealthy elites and the rest of the population. Oil activities have also caused significant environmental degradation in the Niger Delta region, affecting the 92 livelihoods of communities dependent on agriculture, fishing, and other natural resources. Pollution, deforestation, and land degradation have led to a loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services, exacerbating the challenges faced by local populations. The cultural fabric of communities in the Niger Delta, including Jesse Kingdom, has been disrupted by the influx of oil activities. Traditional practices, cultural norms, and social structures are increasingly under threat, leading to a loss of identity and cohesion within these communities.
