ABSTRACT
This study investigates the influence of Nollywood movies on the political consciousness of Nigerian youths, specifically focusing on students of The University of Benin, using three Nollywood movies, Gangs of Lagos, (2023) The Black Book, (2023) and Jagun Jagun, (2023) as a case study. No doubt, Nollywood movies has become powerful drivers of socio-political change in the society. The research explores the themes, narratives, and portrayals of political issues within these movies, with a detailed literature review. Survey research design using questionnaire was adopted as the methodology. Therefore, the researcher adopted two major theories for this study, agenda setting and media dependency theory which stipulates the role of media in educating and enlightening the public. The researcher discovered that exposure to Nollywood movies play an important role in contributing to the political consciousness, civic engagement and awareness among Nigerian youths. Therefore, the researcher made the following recommendations among others; that Nigerian youths should engage critically with Nollywood movies as a form of socio-political and civic engagement expression, Nollywood movie makers should recognize the significant influence of Nollywood movies in shaping the political consciousness of Nigerian youths and consider these impacts when producing and directing movies.
