ABSTRACT

One of the disadvantages of gasoline and diesel generators is their menacing sound, which can be a source of noise pollution. This research was geared at investigating the effects of this noise pollution caused by generators and how it affects learning within the University. Though it seemed the University community had gotten used to the generators and their highpitched sounds. Hence, it was imperative to find out if the sound is really harmless, or indeed an abnormality that has grown to become the new normal over time. In this study, three faculties – Engineering, Physical Sciences and Arts - were selected in the University as the case study. Firstly, a survey questionnaire was used to ascertain the opinions of students on the subject matter. The students were selected randomly, 50 per faculty, summing up to 150 students. A sound level metre was then used to obtain the average noise levels due to the utilization of generators in these faculties under review.
