ABSTRACT
This research work examines “the impact of manpower development on efficient management of parastatals: a case study of Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC).” This research work seeks to ascertain: the types of training programmes that are available in the organization; if the training offered are relevant to the manpower needs of the organization; if the training provided increases efficiency and effectiveness in the organization and determine the importance of manpower training and employees development in industry. Data were extracted with questionnaire, presented with tables and simple percentages and analyzed with chisquare statistics. From the result of findings, it was discovered that training programmes offered in organizations is able to increase the effectiveness of employees and the efficiency of the work force; ensuring adequate training allows management to understand the needs of its employees, and helps them devise proper training programmes that meet with the professional needs of the employees; providing training programmes for employees, making the core confident, as they are able to discharge their duties with greater efficiency; and manpower development occupies a very important position in all organizations. Manpower development has been fully recognized by management as a major driving force for its work force efficiency and effective utilization. Therefore, it is recommended that as much as possible, attempt should be intensified to send senior staff to training courses; there is the need to make qualified and motivated staff available at the right time and in the right quantity and with the highly competitive nature of the public sector and corporate firms in Nigeria, company’s which intend to excel must realize that its greatest asset is its people, and must not only pay lip service. They must therefore ensure adequate human capital development, so as to effectively utilize its workforce, in order to ensure good competitive position.
