ABSTRACT

Over the years, unemployment has been a bane of economic growth and development in Nigeria. Following the investigation of the effect of unemployment on economic indices in Nigeria, this study revealed that unemployment has a significant effect on gross domestic product per capita in Nigeria but has no statistical relationship with balance of payments, both of which are used as proxy for economic indices in this study. This implies that, although unemployment may not be the sole explanation for the direction of economic indicators in Nigeria, it could have a contributory effect on the direction of economic indicators in the country. Thus, the issue of unemployment must be tackled with urgency in order to quell the potential risk it poses to the Nigerian economy as a whole.
