ABSTRACT

      The study investigated the impact of Literacy Education in community development in Ikpboa Okha local government area of Edo State. In order to achieve the objectives of the study, four (4) research questions were raised to guide the study

     The population of the study consists of all the four (4) literacy education centers in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State. A survey research design was adopted for the study. A total of 127 participants drawn through stratified and simple random sampling technique constituted the sample for the study. One instrument was used for the study namely: a self-structured questionnaire titled: Influence of Literacy Education in Community Development. The experts judgment approach was adopted in the validity of the questionnaire and it reliability was carried out using the test-retest method was used this involves administering the questionnaire to about 20 respondents their responses were correlated using th Pearson product moment correlation to determine the reliability of the instrument. The researcher personally administered the data and also retrieved the data. The data collected were properly analysed and tabulated. The response were statistically analysed by the use of simple percentages, mean and standard deviation. The descriptive statistics involved simple percentages, mean and standard deviation.

     It was found in the study that literacy education play a major role in the social and economic development of Ikpoba Okha local government Area of Edo State by  opening doors to better education, improve the living conditions of people, by upgrading the skills of adults to increase their employability and job performance and helping to increase productivity. There are certain factors militating against literacy education programmes in Ikpoba-Okha local government area of Edo State which are insufficient funding, lack of materials and infrastructures, gender inequality, shortage of qualified teachers and poor conducive environment. The study concluded that literacy education programmes are important factors to be considered for community development and it's necessary to see that these programmes thrive in Ikpoba Okha local government area of Edo State. The study proffered a number of recommendations which includes the fact that it's imperative for the government to further invest in literacy education programmes as it has proven to be essential for socio-economic development of people in the area of study and government and non-governmental organizations help address problems identified to enable literacy education programme to achieve its stated goals.
