ABSTRACT
This study is an investigation on the impact of library management on academic performance of students in University of Benin. Four research questions were raised to guide the study. Descriptive survey research design was adopted by the study. The population of the study was comprised of all the 100 level and 400 level library science students in the Department of Educational Management (DEM) in the 2021/2022 academic session with a total number of one hundred and fifty (150) students. The purposive sampling technique was adopted by the study to select a sample size of 100 (hundred) students to make up the sample for the study. A structured questionnaire titled: Impact of Library Management on the Academic Performance of Students Questionnaire (IPMAPSQ) was used for data collection. The Cronbach Alpha reliability technique was adopted by the study to ascertain the consistency of the instrument which yielded a reliability co-efficient of 0.76. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as simple percentages and frequency counts.
The results shows that the school library positive significant effect on students’ academic performance in University of Benin; The result also revealed that there is significant difference between performance of students’ who use the library and those who does not use the library in the University of Benin; the results indicated that library management impacts on the quality of teaching and learning in the University of Benin; the result further revealed that the roles of school libraries influence the educational development of students in the University of Benin.
Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended amongst others: Government as well other stakeholders in the education industry should as a matter of urgency increase her annual budgetary allocation to the education sector to facilitate the procurement and rehabilitation of existing libraries to facilitate the frequent usage and accessibility of libraries by students, there should be regular and periodic seminars and symposias for students to enlighten them on the need to access and use the libraries on a consistent basis as it has the potentialities to enhance the quality of their academic achievement in both internal and external examinations to mention but a few.
