ABSTRACT
This study examines the impact of home environment on the academic performance of nursery school children in Oredo Local Government Area, Edo State, Nigeria. The purpose of this research is to ascertain the influence of home environment on the academic achievements of nursery school children. A descriptive survey research design was employed, utilizing questionnaires administered to collect data, which was analyzed using means standard deviation methods. The sample comprised 80 randomly selected teachers from nursery schools in Oredo Local Government Area, Edo State, Nigeria.
The study revealed that home environment significantly impacts children's academic performance in Oredo schools, highlighting that learning materials at home are crucial for academic achievement. It was found that home environment plays a major role in students' school success and parenting style affects students' academic performance. Additionally, students who achieve high educational performance at school were more likely to be from urban areas with educated parents of higher occupational status and income. The study also indicated that homework acts as a focal point of teacher complaints and parental pressure, while poverty affects a child's academic success in various ways. Children of highly educated parents were found to achieve greater academic success. This research demonstrates that the home environment has a substantial impact on the academic performance of nursery school children in Oredo Local Government Area, Edo State, Nigeria. It is essential to consider the influence of various home environment factors in enhancing the educational achievements of young children.
