Abstract:
This study explores the significant role of health education in preventing communicable diseases among students attending Shining Star School in Benin City. Communicable diseases pose a substantial threat to public health, especially among school-aged children. Health education programs have been recognized as crucial tools for raising awareness and promoting healthy behaviors to reduce the risk of these diseases. The research adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. A sample of students from Shining Star School participated in the study, providing insights into their knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to communicable disease prevention. The study also investigates the effectiveness of the school's existing health education curriculum, identifying strengths and areas for improvement.Quantitative data revealed that while students generally possessed a basic understanding of communicable diseases, there were gaps in their knowledge of specific prevention measures. Additionally, attitudes and behaviors related to hygiene, vaccination, and disease transmission showed room for enhancement. Qualitative findings provided deeper insights into students' perceptions of health education and its impact on their daily lives. The study highlights the importance of tailored health education interventions that address the unique needs and challenges faced by students in a school environment. Collaborative efforts between educators, healthcare professionals, and parents are crucial for implementing comprehensive health education programs. By bridging the knowledge gaps and fostering positive attitudes towards preventive measures, health education can empower students to make informed decisions about their health and contribute to the overall well-being of the school community.
