ABSTRACT
In contemporary Nigerian Politics, the concept of godfatherism has strongly established itself as a guiding principle. The zeal to get power and occupy key positions in government has been one major factor that encouraged godfatherism in Nigeria. This paper is an exploration on the significant impact of godfatherism in Nigerian politics and politicians. The research opined that there is a a significant relationship between godfatherism and politicians in Nigeria and how it has undermined the democratic process. This paper argued that since Nigeria's transition to democracy, there hasn't been any political scenario where godfathers do not play a roll. In attempting a discourse of this issue, the elite theory was adopted as a theoretical framework of this study. The method of data collection was both primary and secondary. It was argued that godfatherism has weakened democracy democracy in Nigerian politics thereby making political actors to establish their political career on the basis of godfatherism. Godfatherism in Nigerian politics is part of the reasons why the masses are apathetic towards political activities. Ordinary, a godfather is supposed to be a coach in the game called Politics rather they’ve become perpetrators of evil practices in the political sphere. The paper further argues that godfathers have done more harm than good to Nigerian politics and politicians.
